How We Build This List

Where our therapist listings come from, what they do and do not tell you, and how to get one corrected or removed.

Source

Listings come from the public NPPES data file published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). We keep active providers whose practice location is in a city we cover and whose primary specialty is one of these: psychologist, clinical social worker, licensed counselor, marriage and family therapist, or addiction counselor. Deactivated NPIs are dropped. Each listing links to the official NPI Registry record.

NPPES is self-reported by providers. An NPI does not confirm a licence. It also says nothing about whether a therapist offers LGBTQ+ affirming care, or which issues they work with, so ask the practice.

How lists are ordered

City pages show up to 10 therapists per credential group, newest NPPES record update first, with the total found. Couples and family pages list marriage and family therapists, and substance abuse pages list addiction counselors, up to 25 each. Featured listings, when present, appear at the top and are labelled "Featured".

Update schedule

We reload the data when CMS publishes a new monthly file. Each list shows the release date of the file and the date we last checked.

Claiming a listing

Claiming is free. Use the form on the For Therapists page with your NPI. Information a practice adds, such as a bio or an affirming-care statement, is labelled "Provided by the practice".

Verified badge

The Verified badge is a paid upgrade ($29/month). It is only shown after we check three things: the NPI is active and matches the name, the licence is active on the state board's website, and identity is confirmed through a work email or a call to the number on file. The badge shows the date of the check.

Featured placement

Featured ($99/month) gives top placement on city and specialty lists and is always labelled "Featured". It does not change any data about the therapist.

Corrections and removal

If a listing is wrong, or you want it removed, contact us with the NPI. We act on requests within 5 business days. Some details come from the NPI Registry, so lasting changes to name, address or phone should also be made in NPPES.
